A BJSM thesis summary maps who moves into frailty and whether community exercise can reverse pre-frailty in older adults

What the research found
The British Journal of Sports Medicine published a PhD Academy Award summary on 4 November 2026. The thesis built a framework for preventing frailty and falls before disability in older adults. It combined longitudinal epidemiology, biomechanics, and randomised clinical trials around four questions: who is most likely to move into frailty, which neuromotor patterns mark a high risk of falling, whether an enjoyable community exercise program can reverse pre-frailty, and whether clinical changes come with changes in movement coordination. The summary describes frailty during the pre-frail stage as dynamic and potentially reversible, and says current prevention work is fragmented. This page is a thesis overview. The portion available for this farm stops before the trial results, so those figures are not reported here. Not medical advice.
Evidence level: Clinical trial. This is among the stronger kinds of evidence, but one study rarely settles a question.
