After a long decline, heart-valve death rates in U.S. older adults rose from 2018 to 2023

EurekAlert and the American Heart Association, 2 November 2026, described preliminary Scientific Sessions abstract 17023. CDC WONDER records counted 1,204,490 valvular heart disease deaths among U.S. adults ages 65 and older from 1999 to 2023 (42.9 percent men, 57.1 percent women). The age-adjusted rate fell from 123.2 deaths per 100,000 in 1999, then rose to 109.2 in 2023. The release highlights a rise of nearly 5 percent from 2018 to 2023, from 104 to more than 109 per 100,000. Men had a higher rate than women (124.7 versus 103.1). Nonmetropolitan areas were higher than metropolitan areas (120.5 versus 110.1). The forecast holds the rate near 109.2 per 100,000 through 2040. Hritvik Jain said the long decline has stopped. This is a preliminary records study. Death certificates cannot show cause, severity, or care, and the pandemic years may have affected the late trend. The deaths are in the older adult population. Support cells in brain tissue from 73 people with Parkinson's showed sex differences in energy-gene and myelin-gene activity

SciTechDaily, 2 November 2026, reported a Federation of European Neuroscience Societies Forum 2026 presentation from Julia Schulze-Hentrich. Brain tissue came from 73 people with Parkinson's disease (28 women and 45 men) and 24 people without it (9 women and 15 men). Gene activity in astrocytes, tied to mitochondria, differed by sex. Gene activity in oligodendrocytes, tied to myelin, also differed by sex. The group described shared stress responses plus these sex differences in support cells. Men are often reported to develop Parkinson's about 1.5 to 2 times as often as women; this tissue study does not by itself explain that gap, and it is not a therapy. In a rodent model, tongue exercise raised output from surviving motor neurons

SciTechDaily, 2 November 2026, reported a University of Missouri preclinical study: tongue exercise increased the activity of surviving motor neurons in a rodent model of hypoglossal motor-neuron loss, the cells that drive tongue movement. The paper, in the Journal of Neurophysiology (Keilholz and colleagues; the news citation dates the paper 12 May 2026), is titled Impact of tongue exercise on hypoglossal axis survival, structure, and output in a rodent model. A separate write-up of the same paper says the exercise did not raise the number of surviving neurons; it changed the output of the ones that remained.
